CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WVVA) — West Virginia residents could soon have easier access to dialysis.

Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced a new $2 million funding opportunity for healthcare providers to expand home dialysis access for West Virginians battling chronic kidney disease, especially those in rural areas.

“Living with kidney disease is hard enough without having to spend hours on the road to get treatment,” Morrisey said in a news release. “This opportunity is about helping more West Virginians learn about home dialysis and connecting patients with the support they may need as they consider their treatment options.”

The initiative seeks to ease the travel and scheduling burdens faced by patients who currently commute long distances for treatment.

Breaking down barriers to care

While receiving dialysis at home offers patients greater flexibility, the state recognized several hurdles that often prevent people from choosing this option:

-Transportation challenges;

-Need for caregiver support;

-Lack of clear medical information; and

-General logistical barriers.

The newly established program will address these issues by funding education, patient navigation services, care coordination, and community partnerships.

Applications are open and grants will be announced later this year.
