Couple's donation to PCH Women's Center to help support parents who experience child loss
PRINCETON, W.Va. (WVVA) - A couple from Speedway, West Virginia wanted to remember their son in a special way on his birthday. Miranda Norman and Derek Gettys’ son, Rowdy Blaze Gettys, was born on July 4, 2022, at Charleston Area Medical Center, but, sadly, died two days later.
When the couple learned that PCH did not have a CuddleCot, they decided to donate one to the Women’s Center in honor of their son Rowdy.
PCH said that a CuddleCot isa well-known system that assists families around the world who are suffering the loss of a baby. The system cools the baby’s body and keeps skin hydrated allowing grieving parents time to spend with their child.
“I knew I wanted to do something for him,” Miranda said. “We decided to raise money for his birthday. A lot of my family and friends donated.”
The couple presented the system to PCH after it arrived from the United Kingdom. A special plaque inscribed with Rowdy’s name was included with the donation.
Nursing staff and administrators gathered to accept the donation from Rowdy’s parents and offered their thanks and appreciation for the gift.
“Having a CuddleCot here allows our moms a longer time to spend with their babies and process their loss,” stated Jackie Mincy, director of Women’s Services.
Mincy adds that unfortunately labor and delivery at the hospital isn’t always about happy moments.
“Unfortunately there’s a sad side of it. There are some babies that die before birth or shortly after. So this gives the parents more time to bond with their baby. Because once they leave the hospital they don’t get to have those happy moments and bring the baby home,” said Mincy.
