WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. (WVVA) - The White Sulphur Springs police chief has resigned his position and reverted to his former job as a patrolman.

Mayor Kathy Glover said former chief D.S. Teubert made the decision himself to resign after recently hiring Timothy Loehmann, one of the two officers involved in the shooting death of 12-year-old Tamir Rice in Cleveland, Ohio in 2014.

Loehmann, who has since resigned from the White Sulphur Springs Police Department, was fired from the Cleveland job after the shooting and it was also revealed he had hidden facts about his past when he applied for the position there.

Glover said the issue was a topic at Monday night’s regular meeting of town council, where she read a statement about what had happened, explaining that the police department does its own hiring, and she was unaware of who the new police officer was.

“I did not know who he was, and I did not have all of the information that should have been given,” she said. “It was something we were unaware of and not prepared for all the way around.”

Glover said she has also apologized to the family of Tamir Rice.

Deputy Chief Julian R. Byer Jr. has been sworn in as the new police chief.
