WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. - (WVVA)  The travel guide developed by Victor Hugo Green, “The Negro Motorist Travel Guide”, better known as “The Green Book”,  helped African Americans find safe havens on their road trips during the time of segregation in the United States.  The listing covered every state, including West Virginia.

If travelers found themselves driving through Greenbrier County, the travel guide directed them to White Sulphur Springs where there were three businesses listed.  These establishments, like all those in “The Green Book”, would accept people of color as customers.

But it wasn’t just travelers who used the Greenbrier County Green Book listings for lodging and restaurants, some celebrities of the era were also sighted in these businesses in Greenbrier County as well.  Find out why by clicking the video clip attached to this article.
