BLUEFIELD, W.Va. (WVVA) - After a holiday surge of COVID-19, we are now seeing a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. New COVID-19 cases across the Two Virginias are taking a significant drop. However, an unsettling statistic is emerging: The decline in vaccine distribution.

Allie Phillips, with the Virginia Department of Health, said the lack of motivation and other factors play a role in that number.

In West Virginia, Dr. Clay Marsh expressed his concern about those low numbers. He said that the more people that contract the new strain put more people who are boosted at risk.

However, with the decrease in new cases, many have been hinting at the possibility of an “Endemic.” But it doesn’t mean covid is going away any time soon.

Another statistic on the decline is the average number of hospitalizations. Virginia is seeing average cases drop by 1,000 per week. In West Virginia, total hospitalizations have dropped by about 300 in the past 2 weeks.
