Retired Raleigh County Police Officer remembered Saturday
BECKLEY, W.Va. (WVVA) - Friends, family and law enforcement officers mourned the passing of retired Lt. Gregory Shawn Kade of Beckley on Saturday at 46 years old. A funeral service was held at the Family Worship Center in Beckley.
Kade served with the Raleigh County Sheriff’s department for nearly 20 years, from 2002 until his retirement in 2021. It’s clear his presence was missed even then, as Sgt. Brian White touched on during Saturday’s service.
“If you had to go to battle, Greg was one you definitely wanted on your side,” said White. “When you lose a person like Greg, it doesn’t just leave a hole. It leaves a gaping hole.”
Kade served as a board member at the Family Worship Center in Beckley as well. During Saturday’s service at the same establishment, his widow Melissa credited the center for putting she and her husband “back on a path of living for God, and for each other.”
“Everything seemed so right and almost perfect,” said Melissa Kade. “That’s part of why I’m struggling with him being taken so soon. But I know God has a plan.”
Kade leaves behind three children along with Melissa. Among heaps of praise, Kade’s friends and family spoke of his role as a protector, larger than life personality and his willingness to counsel anybody in need -- before a final call to service through an end of watch radio call.
“With our regards and heartfelt gratitude, Raleigh Control will now show Lieutenant Gregory Shawn Kade out of service for the final time. Report to your final watch, we will take it from here.”
Kade’s funeral service can be viewed in full on the Family Worship Center’s Facebook page.
