FAYETTE COUNTY, Va. (WVVA) - A Fayette County man has been sentenced to prison for gross child neglect.

Stephen C. Coiner, 40, was sentenced to one to five years in prison on Tuesday, January 4th, for the felony crime of child neglect creating substantial risk of injury or death. Coiner pled guilty to the charge in November, 2021.

Coiner must serve a minimum of one year before he will be eligible for parole. Subsequent to completing parole, Coiner will further be subject to ten years of extended supervised release.

According to the Fayette County Office of Prosecuting Attorney, on March 13, 2021, the Fayette County 911 Center received notification that a 2 year old child was walking down the middle of U.S. Route 60 in Boomer, West Virginia. The caller also informed the center that the child was standing on the double yellow line and that the child is now safe in the car with them. The child was not injured.

A Fayette County Sheriff’s Deputy arrived on scene and after a door-to-door search, the parents of the child were located. During questioning, it was determined the mother was unaware the child was missing and Coiner tried to minimize the situation. Upon further investigating, it was made clear that Coiner had agreed to watch the child and had failed to properly supervise the child.

While unsupervised, the child left the parents house and eventually walked the short distance to Route 60 where he was found.
