MERCER COUNTY, W.Va. (WVVA) - Two Mercer County schools were recognized by the West Virginia Department of Education for their commitment to supporting military children and families. Oakvale and Brushfork Elementary Schools were both recognized on Wednesday. Those at Oakvale Elementary said they were grateful for the award.

“It means a lot to us to be given this award because we are very patriotic. We work very hard to support the military and our families in our community and this award just recognizes everything that we’ve instilled into our students.” said Principal LaCosta Hodges.

Students at the school said it means a lot to them to recognize those who serve.

“They’re really important. I think they’ve done really good things.” said Phillip Henderson.

In it’s continued support for the military, Oakvale Elementary adopted the 111th Engineer Brigade which is stationed in the Middle East.
