BLUEFIELD, W.Va. (WVVA) - There’s something special about doing for others whether they’re on two legs or four and no one understands that more intimately than Kim Bay with the Mercer County Humane Society.

“I currently have two dogs and fifteen cats--six of which are kittens which I’m fostering. My daughter is a vet and that helps a lot.”

“Some of these dogs up here we really get wrapped up in them especially if they’ve been here a long time or they have special story.”

Special stories like Rocket, an area businesswoman was on her way to work when she spotted him in Rock, West Virginia.

He was hairless, emaciated and crammed into a crate that was obviously too small sitting on the side of the road.

She contacted the humane society who took Rocket into its care and within a matter of weeks this kim and her team who nursed him to a full bill of health.

On top of helping the furry kind she helps our future-- the children.

“Someone came to our church and spoke to us about the need for mentors and positive influences,” said Bay.

Bay was paired with Abby through the ‘We Can’ program.

“She’s now 11 so we’ve been together that long,” said Bay.

“I love seeing new things through her eyes. She has taken dance, gymnastics, cheerleading, horsebackriding--things she wouldn’t be able to do if she didn’t have someone to help her with that.”

Dedicating her life’s work to the betterment of human and animal kind is what she hopes she’s always known for.

“That I did as much good as I could with as much time as I had. I don’t consider myself a hero. I like what i do i love being up here with these animals I like seeing their transformations. I like being with Abby watching her grown up and become a young woman.”
