BLUEFIELD, Va. (WVVA) - At Maple Hill Cemetery, more than 300 African Americans were honored at a gravesite left neglected, Until Friday.

Susie Green’s relatives are buried here. She spearheaded the project for their story to be told.

During the ceremony, many expressed how this is a step toward healing wounds from the past. Some buried here are former slaves.

Future generations can learn from this historical marker, and learn from this nation’s past to build a better future.

There will be another ceremony at maple hill cemetery in May 2022. At that time, 3 granite stones will be set up. They will be engraved with more than one hundred names of African Americans who were buried here.
