Roads to Prosperity I-77 Beckley widening project nearly complete
BECKLEY, W.Va. (WVVA) - Some of the traffic troubles on Interstate-77 through Beckley are finally over.
After a couple years of driving through narrowed lanes and roadwork, the Roads to Prosperity Beckley widening project is nearly complete.
The eight mile stretch is one of the busiest sections of the entire interstate in West Virginia. The project has added a third lane in both the North and Southbound directions.
“From where it intersects 64 to Route 19 at North Beckley, we usually have 18 million transactions a year just through that eight mile stretch,” said West Virginia Parkways Authority Exec. Dir. Jeff Miller.
The project eliminates a major choke hold on the interstate with traffic often backed up for hours on end after an accident.
The widening part of the work was completed just before the Thanksgiving Day holiday, ahead of Thursday and Sunday -- two of the biggest travel days of the year.
Miller was hard at work Wednesday making sure it was a smooth ride for travelers.
“We’re out making sure traffic flows smoothly. We’ve got our courtesy patrol out, State Police, extra tollbooth workers, and flaggers at each barrier to make sure West Virignians and the traveling public have a smooth ride.”
Miller said the final touch will be when crews pave the road in the Spring.
