Police round up 63 on Wise County drug counts

WISE, Va. (AP) -- A police roundup of 63 people indicted on charges involving prescription drugs is under way in Wise County.

The mass arrests Thursday resulted from a joint investigation by the Wise County Sheriff's Office, Virginia State Police, the Southwest Virginia Narcotics Task Force and police departments in Big Stone Gap, Coeburn, Wise, Pound, St. Paul and the city of Norton.

Authorities said they shifted their ongoing joint "Street Sweeper" investigation to target the illegal sale and use of prescription narcotics. Almost half of the drugs listed in the indictments contained hydrocodone, such as Lortab.

Authorities say the illegal use of prescription medications is the leading cause of drug overdose deaths in the county.
