Woodrow Wilson High School's athletic director to retire

BECKLEY, W.Va. (WVVA) The athletic director at Woodrow Wilson High School will be retiring after more than 39 years of service.

Tim Carrico oversaw the sports programs at the school for the last six years. Before that, he served as Athletic Dir. of Shady Spring Middle School for 33 years and also spent time working as a science teacher.

Friend and former Woodrow Wilson High Principal Ron Cantley credits Carrico with bringing the school's athletic department out of a place of economic crisis to a place of stability.

"He combined a solid work ethic, good humor, and technical competence in a way that served the students of Woodrow Wilson well," said Cantley. "He came early, stayed late, and was diligently on task."

As for the part about his job he will miss the most, Carrico said it is his colleagues, and of course, the kids.

"There are a lot more important things in life than winning. The coaches that are on staff do that. They instill other values besides winning a particular sport. Being around that atmosphere, I'll miss that quite a bit."

Carrico will be replaced by Casey Crane, who previously served as a part-time athletic director at Greenbrier East High School.

Friends and colleagues will celebrate Carrico's service at Pasquales on Saturday, August 11th, at 6 p.m.
