Optional detour during I-77 construction, recommended for driver safety

The West Virginia Division of Highways is preparing to finish phase one of construction on the Northbound side of Interstate 77.

The DOH says West Virginia Paving is scheduled to begin working on the Southbound lanes on August 20th, with major adjustments for drivers traveling South on I-77.

On July 9th, the DOH announced it was beginning preparations, to build a crossover near Exit Nine for Southbound traffic, merging into a contra-lane flow pattern. Yesterday, the Construction Engineer for District 10 Terra Goins said they're eliminating the contra-lane, due to safety concerns.

"We've had a few minor accidents with the detour route in the construction zone," Goins said. "But no major accidents or fatalities and that's what we want to see at the end of this project."

As commuters approach Exit Nine traveling South on I-77, they'll have two options. They can continue driving straight on I-77 South or turn right onto the detour route of 460, returning to I-77 at Exit One.

"We encourage you to get off the 460 route," said Goins. "With the cars getting off, there won't be as much traffic."

There will be no commercial truck detour during the Southbound construction.

All Southbound commuters must be attentive to construction zone limits, with the mandatory speed of 55 mph in the construction zone. The Mercer County Sheriff's Department will be enforcing speed control on I-77, once Southbound Construction begins.

The alternate route for commuters is not mandatory, but the DOH says it will keep traffic moving.
