WV State Police prepared for odd crimes at the state fair

As many as 30 state troopers plus the command bus will working the WV State Fair. Their work includes traffic, safety and overall security.

Sgt. Andy Evans of the WV State Police described the work saying, “You get to see a lot of things you don’t normally get to see.”

He said last year there was a stolen pig. The Sgt. described the challenges associated with that crime saying, “It’s not like it had a serial number or anything that you can look it up. I guess it had a little tag on its ear.” Sgt. Evans said security cameras helped to find the missing pig last year.

And it is not just the WV State Police that will keep fair goers safe.

Greenbrier County Homeland Security and Emergency Management will be running a facility from the WV State Fair as well. One of the things it will monitor closely is weather. A meteorologist from the National Weather service will be on hand for nights with major attractions because Al Whittaker the Director of Greenbrier County Homeland Security and Emergency Management says bad weather can cause issues with the temporary structures. “Biggest thing that we watch for are some of the big rides. Especially when you get up to 50-60 mph winds. The other thing that we watch for is the tents. Tents are the biggest concern of all. 30 mph, 40 mph wind gusts coming through could pick up some tents.”
