One of two men charged in connection with an attempted robbery that resulted in the shooting death of a 48-year-old woman has been found guilty of murder.

The three-day trial against Derrick M. Crouse, 21, ended on Wednesday. The first degree murder conviction came with a recommendation of mercy. Crouse will be eligible for parole after serving 15 years in prison.

Janet Garrett, 48, was shot to death on April 16, 2017 inside her home on Berry Street, near Oak Hill.

Crouse was the one who pulled the trigger. Another man, Matthew Underwood, 32, of Oak Hill entered a guilty plea earlier this month to the charge accessory after the fact. He faces up to five years in prison.
