Fundraiser for "West Virginia Poor People's Campaign" at the Sweet Shoppe in Lewisburg

Posted:

A fundraiser benefiting the Poor People’s Campaign is being held at the Sweet Shoppe in Lewisburg on Friday. The funds go towards sending West Virginians to our nation’s capitol.

The Poor People’s Campaign is a re-envisionment of Dr. Martin Luther King's campaign of the same name from 1968. Organizers across the nation are bringing it back to combat what they say are social injustices that cause poverty in the world’s richest nation. The multi year campaign kicks off with a rally in D.C. on June 23rd.

Organizers in West Virginia say they want voices from our state to be among the bunch. Jules Kessler said, “…that’s a big goal of the campaign is to connect urban poverty and rural poverty. Sometimes we like to think of them as totally separate issues but really the underlying causes are the same…”

Buses leave from Charleston, Beckley, and Lewisburg on June 23rd. If you want to learn more you can check out the West Virginia Poor People’s Campaign facebook page.
