Homeowner wants Town of Tazewell to fix ongoing flooding issues

Nathan Rowe and his wife have lived in Tazewell County since 2014. Shortly after purchasing their home, they discovered issues with the culvert drain in the creek, right behind their house. Rainy seasons consistently cause an overflow of water from the creek, right into their backyard. But on Memorial Day weekend, Rowe says the flooding was the worst he's ever seen.

"We've never seen it as high as we did that day," said Rowe. "Our dog kennel was pretty much under water. If my wife was not here, the dogs could of drowned. Her car was almost washed away."

The flooding spread into Nathan's basement, damaging property in the home.

Nathan says he's reported the flooding incident to the Town of Tazewell but feels more can be done to fix it.

"The culvert needs to be fixed," Rowe said. "The road needs to be pulled up. I'm not trying to lash out against anyone personally. I think this is a community concern and not just here on Brooks Street."

Town Manager Todd Day says culverts across the County were overwhelmed during the storms on Memorial Weekend. Day says addressing the flooding problems are on the agenda for today's Town Council Meeting.
