Hospice tackles tough issues at palliative care conference in Beckley

BECKLEY, W.Va. (WVVA) End of life care can be a tough subject to tackle with family members and loved ones. To make those discussions easier, Hospice of Southern West Virginia is hosting their 18th annual Palliative Care Conference at Tamarack.

The two-day conference is designed to challenge and strengthen the public's knowledge of the services available during this difficult time.

As Public Relations Dir. Tim Carrico explains, end of life care is a tough conversation to have, but it is a necessary one to help loved ones in their final days.

"The problem we're seeing is we have patients coming in who only have a couple weeks to live and we provide services for someone who has a prognosis of six months or less. We want to get them into our care faster so they can really have 100 percent Hospice care."

The event continues on Friday with participants from all walks of life, ranging from medical professionals to social workers to people who just want to learn more.

While Hospice services are provided primarily in the home, they may also be carried out at long-term facilities or the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.
