County commission recommends festival approval

It was a packed courthouse in Greenbrier Co. tonight for the zoning hearing about the West Virginia Renaissance Festival.

Ultimately the Board of Zoning Planning Commission recommended to the county commission that the festival should be approved for a conditional use permit.

This is a win for the festival owners who previously had been denied exceptions to the zoning ordinances that govern the Lewisburg district where the festival is located.

"The only thing that swung it our way was the gigantic support that we got from not just our friends but the local people of Lewisburg and Greenbrier Co. came out in full force and obviously it swung the commissioners our way," said Renaissance Festival Owner, Gaso Stavrakis.

One issue brought up in the meeting was a 45 day notice before the change to the zoning is made. It's not clear yet if that will apply to the conditional use permit that was recommended by the planning commission.

The festival is set to start the second weekend in June.
