A community gathered in remembrance on Wednesday, as the day marked one year since Bluefield police officer Aaron Crook died in the line of duty after his cruiser was struck at the intersection of Princeton Ave. and Lee St. during a DUI stop.

Wednesday night, the Bluefield Police Department held a vigil in his memory.

"It's truly a special day in the heart of Bluefield. A year ago to this day, we lost a very great guy. He was my FTO. He trained a lot of us, even the younger guys coming in and even the older guys coming in. But I always asked him for advice and if he could help out in any way, he would," said Bluefield police officer Kevin Ross.

Since the tragic accident, Crook's brother's in blue have been left behind, coping with the death of one of their own.

"It was the hardest experience I've ever had as a Bluefield police officer. That's something you never want to do, you know, bury one of your own," said Bluefield Police Sgt. Justin Lucas.

Tragic as the loss my be, Lt. Crook left behind a lasting legacy that the community will never forget.

"Integrity, his commitment to his family and his love for fishing," said Aaron Neely, a lifelong friend of Crook.

Crook served as an officer for nine years.
