Bluefield man enters pleas to murder, robbery

A Bluefield man and known 'shot caller' for the California Crips gang has entered pleas to second degree murder and second degree robbery.

Orlando Dmond Davis, 44, was arrested in June 2016 for the beating death of a man inside a grocery store bathroom in Bluewell, WV.

Randall Morgan, 54, of Bluefield was found unconscious on June 3, 2016 inside the Kroger store on U.S. Route 52. His payroll check, which had just been cashed, was missing. Morgan died the next day at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

The same night Morgan was attacked, an 18-year-old worker at the Save-A-Lot in Brushfork was assaulted from behind. At least $100 in cash was stolen from his wallet. The worker has since made a full recovery. Click here to read a previous report.

Davis entered a "best interest" plea on Wednesday. According to Mercer County Prosecuting Attorney George Sitler, that means Davis did not admit guilt but agreed there was enough evidence to convict him. Davis claims to have no memory of the crimes because he was under the influence of "crack" cocaine at the time.

Sitler said the murder conviction carries a 40 year sentence and the robbery conviction carries a 5-18 year prison term. Those sentences will run consecutively. The sentencing hearing will be held on July 30. Sitler said Morgan's family and the worker who was assaulted were consulted before the plea agreement was reached.

Wednesday's plea hearing was held in front of Circuit Court Judge Mark Wills.

Davis was taken back to Southern Regional Jail.
