3 charged in Wythe County armed robbery, police chase

WYTHE COUNTY, VA (WVVA) -

Three people are arrested after a high speed chase on I-81 through two Virginia counties.

The police pursuit began Monday evening after a Pulaski County deputy and Virginia State Trooper spotted a vehicle that matched the description of one used in the armed robbery of the Travel Plaza in Wythe County. The robbery took place at 10:38 p.m. when two men, each carrying a firearm, demanded money from the clerk. They left in a white SUV traveling northbound on the interstate. 

During the high speed chase, officers with the Christiansburg Police Department successfully deployed "spike strips" at mile marker 120, The suspects continued to drive at "speeds of 60-65 miles per hour" on rims, according to Wythe County Sheriff Keith Dunagan. Eventually, they wrecked into the median near mile marker 136 in Roanoke County.

  • Christyen Elijah Sumpter, 26, of Sarasota, Florida was charged with robbery, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, brandishing, and conspiracy.
  • Michael Anthony Wilson, 24, of Sarasota, Florida was charged with robbery, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, brandishing, and conspiracy.
  • Parla Isel Pineda Oserio, 23, of Sarasota, Florida was charged with robbery principal in the second and conspiracy.

Sheriff Dunagan said the white Ford Expedition the suspects were driving was stolen from a woman during a holdup at an ATM in Orangeburg, South Carolina earlier on Monday. The vehicle also matched the description of one used in a robbery in Charlotte, North Carolina and the armed robbery of a gas station in Jonesville, North Carolina. 

The three suspects were taken to the Wythe County Sheriff's Office for processing.
