Bluefield leader laid to rest

The Mercer County community was saddened on Saturday morning as Charles Peters, a longtime leader of Bluefield, was put to rest.

Charles was a major force in the coal industry for six decades. He also helped baseball rise in Bluefield and he aided everything from the Mercer County Airport to the local boy scouts.

Charles also was a veteran. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942. He was a sergeant and a squad leader that fought in German towns of the Ardennes Forest the day that Hitler invaded and ignited the Battle of the Bulge.

Locally, he worked with the Bluefield Rescue Squad, Mercer County Airport Authority, The Community Foundation of the Virginias and Bluefield State College.

Charles Peters passed away on Tuesday.
