First Day of road work I-77 contributes to accident

Thursday was the first day of of scheduled road work on Interstate 77 and things got really hectic for one truck driver.

West Virginia's Division of Highways put up signs on I-77 northbound, warning truck drivers to detour onto Exit 1 towards Bluefield.

One sign warns truck drivers not to take Exit 66 but one driver misread the sign, thinking it was part of the detour.

The truck driver took Exit 66 and got stuck attempting to make a wide turn. The driver was not hurt but did say the signs along the interstate were confusing and hard to follow.

Mercer County Sheriff Tommy Bailey says his department will be patrolling the interstate, to prevent future accidents during this construction period.

"It's to slow people down," Bailey said. "To keep people from getting killed and save someone's life."

West Virginia Division of Highways has been prepping all of Mercer County drivers for this construction phase and detour.
