Tazewell County moving forward without Mitchell Stadium

Graham High School will play home football games at Tazewell High School for the 2018-2019 season.

This news comes from Tazewell County Board Member David Woodard.

"We've always rented that stadium from the City of Bluefield, West Virginia," Woodard said. "We became concerned because there are no negotiations, no returned phone calls from the City or Mercer County Schools about our ability to use the stadium."

Woodard says the Tazewell Central Office has attempted to negotiate a contract with both parties since January, without any success.

"We have no contract. To prevent Graham High School from not having a place to play football at all, we made Tazewell High School's facility available to them to use for home games for the 2018 season. This is until Bluefield, Virginia's multi-use facility is completed."

The Mercer County School Board say they've reached out to officials in Tazewell County. Woodard confirmed that negotiations with the board have began again, around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

As for Bluefield, City Manager Dane Rideout says the board will be taking formal action at the next two board meetings to complete the transfer of property of Mitchell Stadium.

Both sides want the high schools in this region to succeed.

"Anything can change," said Woodard. "Our concern was, we're getting late in the season to change an entire football schedule for two schools to make it work out. If something was going to happen, it needed to right away."
