2018 Farm Bill may affect Alderson Community Market

(Alderson, WV) Congress is expected to vote on the Farm Bill at the end of this week.

The farm bill is an 867 billion dollar legislative package that subsidizes agricultural and food assistance programs. The main changes this year involve the Supplemental Nutrition Program or SNAP. 340,000 West Virginians participate in SNAP.

The new Farm Bill would impose work requirements on SNAP participants including 20 hours per week of job training and proof of attempt to job search.

Fawn Valentine an Alderson Community Market volunteer, a market that accepts SNAP, had this to say, "It’s certainly a bit of a barrier. I happen to think a lot of people who are on the SNAP program are disabled or they’re very involved taking care of their children or an older family member."

The new Farm Bill also adds EBT transaction fees for businesses that support participating retailers.

Beth Ryan an Alderson Community Market volunteer and vendor had this to say, "Well it would make our profits not as high, and they’re already not very high since we’re selling things at a low price so that anyone who is interested in having healthy local food can have it."

Congress is expected to vote on the bill at the end of this week.

The Alderson Community Market is open on Tuesdays from 4-7 pm.
