MERCER COUNTY (WVVA) -

Education leaders in Mercer County gathered today in a field close to Route 460 to break ground on a new elementary school.

Construction on the school, Mountain Valley Elementary School, will begin soon and the school is expected to be open by the 2019-2020 school year.

The school is expected to be a major improvement from Ceres Elementary School and Cumberland Heights Early Learning Center, the schools Mountain Valley is planned to replace. Mercer County Schools Superintendent Deborah Akers noted that this school will be accessible to handicapped students, a change from the current schools which are not.

Head architect David Ferguson noted that the school will be built to be much more energy efficient than the current schools, for example using high quality insulation and natural light to keep heating and cooling costs down.
