WV DOT: Traffic on Route 219 in Lewisburg more of an inconvenience than a problem

LEWISBURG, WV -

The West Virginia Department of Traffic says that compared to other areas in the state the traffic on state road 219 in Lewisburg is more of an inconvenience than a problem.

Jim Moore, the District 9 Maintenance Engineer said, "We have done traffic studies. We recognize that there are some traffic delays especially during the morning and afternoon rush hours. It has been studied in the past. But realistically it takes five to ten minutes longer to get through town versus free flow during those high traffic times. And typically in the middle of the day during afternoons it’s not that big of a tie up." He also said that the West Virginia Department of Traffic has to compare the traffic issues along 219 with traffic issues in Charleston, WV and Morgantown, WV, which are much worse.

Over the past few years the West Virginia Department of Transportation has added a left turn lane and connected Fairview to provide an alternate route. Based on the most recent traffic study conducted a couple of years ago the department says that traffic is not escalating and it does not have plans to add a bypass or expand the current right-of-way.
