UPDATE: 1 dead, a dozen injured after car crashes into Raleigh County bingo hall

A woman was killed and a dozen people were injured after a driver crashed into a Raleigh County bingo hall.

It happened around 9:40 p.m. Thursday night on Main Street in Sophia. 

According to the Raleigh County Sheriff's Office, a vehicle driven by Peggy Griffin, 51, tried to "pull onto Main Street toward Beckley when it was struck by another vehicle traveling toward Tams." Griffin's vehicle accelerated, lost control, and crashed into a parked vehicle outside of the Sophia Bingo Hall. It then smashed through a wall, "where it struck several patrons inside."

One patron, identified as Linda Keen, died "as a result of injuries sustained."

The crash remains under investigation. The Raleigh County Sheriff's Office, Sophia Police Department, and West Virginia State Police responded to the crash.

SOPHIA, W.Va. (WVVA) At least 12 people are injured after a car crashed into a bingo hall in Sophia Thursday night. 

Dispatchers said the call came in around 9:40 p.m. to the business located on Main Street. 

According to a customer, James Smith, who was playing bingo at the time, another bingo player who had just left crashed into the hall. He said at least one woman was trapped under the vehicle.

"It felt like an explosion or something.... a terrorist attack," said Smith. "The car came through the wall and I jumped over the table. My main concern was the lady pinned against the wall." 

After the crash, Smith said the driver "got on her phone. She called and told them she was in a wreck. The officer came and asked her for her operator's license. She left in a stretcher." 

Right now, there is no word on what caused the crash. 

As of 11 p.m. on Thursday, the Raleigh County Sheriff's Dept., Coal City Fire Dept., the Sophia Fire Dept., and Best Ambulance were still on scene.
