HOMETOWN HERO: Diana Billings

(WVVA) -

Wafting through the air every Thursday evening are the delicious smells of dinner at Johnston Chapel Baptist Church.
A warm meal is served by the hands of cooking maven -- Diana Billings

"I'm blessed. I'm blessed to be able to serve them and help in any little way that I can," says Billings.

Billings works with Celebrate Recovery a bible based 12-step recovery program and every Thursday
they celebrate participants progress through food and fellowship.

"Celebrate Recovery is for anyone out there with any kind of hurt, hang up or habit that they need help with with we have a program that goes through a step study..this is kind of a fellowship for our people," Billings says.

For hours Diana and her team are in the kitchen preparing meals for 60 to 100 people.

"Some families come here and this is the only meal they get together on a Thursday night. When you see them out [in] fellowship with each other," says Billings, "we have so many hurting people in our area. We can go overseas and help but we need to help in our little small communities we've got a lot of hurting people and to help them just means everything in the world to me."

It can be said that Diana's love of service runs through her blood..her father was 2017 Purple Heart recipient..
and that service..in addition to that familial connection there is that connection of her faith.

"It's just really cool to look out and say this is working," says Billings.

"I'm just very thankful that the Lord let's me be a part of it. My service is to God and I just get to see it."

It is the fact that she's part of something greater than herself and changing lives that make Diana Billings a Hometown Hero.
