Holmes weathering the storm for Richlands soccer

Just a couple weeks remain in the high school soccer season in Virginia. The Richlands girls soccer team is steadily climbing up the ranks in class 2A hoping to make a return trip back to the state tournament and it starts with striker Mya Holmes.

Once again the Richlands girls soccer team is a threat for a state title in large part to senior Mya Holmes.

"It's my last one, so I'm going to make the best of it," Holmes said.

Named a captain for the first time in career this season, Holmes says she been ready to take on her new leadership role.

"It is a big responsibility. I don't feel different, but I just feel like that if they need anything to help with, that they can ask and I can try to help the best way that I can," Holmes said.

The Lady Blues have made it to the state final four the last two seasons and head coach LaRhonda Lindsey thinks Holmes can make it a three-peat.

"Mya is just really on her game finishing this year year and that's been fantastic for us. She's always got a good disposition. Listens well, does anything you ask her to do, she'll try to do it," Lindsey said.

Holmes has 50 goals this year alone , and 162 in her career but the main focus is getting her team over the hump.

"I feel so, it's the best feeling ever. Every time I score I love it. But I kind of look at it as I have to do it," Holmes said.

Now with all of that experience under their belts, Holmes and company know what it will take to compete.

"I think that it showed us that our competition and how good we need to be beat them. We've been last year and this year we're going to come as hard as we can," Holmes said.
