High School Sports see benefits of stadium

The town council for Bluefield announced yesterday it's plan to build a multi-use outdoor facility. The project is expected to cost 6 million dollars and will take eight months to complete once the construction has started in Spring of 2019.

The facility will be located beside Graham Middle School, including the school's track and field.

"These kids getting to practice on Turf would be amazing," said Patrick Vuckner, assistant football coach at Graham Middle. "That's something I hope happens. We definitely have to share it with the High School program and I hope that works out."

The Principal Lee Salyers is excited about what could happen with this facility being so close to the school and says the students are already excited.

"It gives our students the opportunity to showcase their athletic abilities and the talent we do have here in Southwest Virginia."

The town of Bluefield expects this facility will attract almost an additional 32,000 thousand tourists every year. They are anticipating 20 community and regional sports and an additional 24 collegiate sporting events.

The Scott Louthan, head basketball and football coach for Graham Middle is excited for this complex to be built.

"We'll get to play our home games here instead of having to travel every game."

Scott sees the bigger impact of having this facility. "Kids who play sports are usually better in school and in the classroom," he says. "Hopefully this new facility will help with the school and the community."
