UPDATE: Tazewell County deputy killed in crash

A part-time deputy with the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office died Tuesday morning in a car wreck.

Sheriff Brian Hieatt says it has been a tough day for all who knew Terry McCann, 45, of Tazewell, VA.

McCann was a passenger in a vehicle that struck a tree around 2:29 a.m. on Thompson Valley Road in Tazewell, according to Sheriff Hieatt.

McCann was with his 24-year-old son, Cody, who survived the crash and is being treated at Bristol Regional Medical Center for serious injuries.

Hieatt says McCann was a full-time employee at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Tazewell. He's survived by his wife, son and daughter.

McCann had worked for the department for the past six years.

The Virginia State Police is handling the investigation. Charges are pending.

At 2:29 a.m. Tuesday (May 1, 2018), Virginia State Police responded to a single-vehicle crash in Tazewell County. A 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier was traveling west on Route 604 when it ran off the road and struck a tree. Both the driver and passenger were able to exit the vehicle on their own. But, the passenger fell down an embankment and became entangled in a barbed-wire fence. The driver ran to a nearby residence to call for help.

The adult male driver was transported to Carilion Tazewell Community Hospital and then flown on to Bristol Regional Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.

The passenger, Terry W. McCann, 45, of Tazewell, Va., was declared deceased at Carilion Tazewell Community Hospital.
