HOMETOWN HERO: Travis Sparks

Give the building behind Travis Sparks home a first glance and it has all the makings of the perfect man cave filled with incredible trinkets from yesteryear and and a hot rod that will one day will be rolling on all fours, but this man cave is more than that it's the hub for his organization 'Cancer Kids and Christmas.'

It all started when he faced his battle with cancer.

“Hearing those words is three of the worst words you'll hear,” said Sparks.

“I got a new grandbaby now but at time my first grandson had just been born, so that's really what made it bad.”

The organization uses funds raised to provide families battling cancer with a Christmas

“We will raise money all year and we will split it between however many families we [have]. Now last year we had 15 families and we actually did raise 48 thousand dollars,” said Sparks.

Some of the funds are raised through the big super raffle 2018.

That raffle includes tools galore and hardware to store those tools in which are donated through both individuals and businesses.

Sparks says he learned about the power of support in his own battle.

“I was really stubborn didn't want no help and come one day a knock on the door and it was my classmates and they actually had a check and without that we wouldn't have [had a] Christmas and that's kinda what gave me the idea.”

In 2016 the organization raised over twenty thousand and the following year double that.

“I understand why people do it but that cancer patients is really the hero.”

It's that love for the patient and the patient's family that makes Travis Sparks a 'Hometown Hero.'
