Wyoming County launches needle-exchange as part of harm reduction program

PINEVILLE, W.Va. (WVVA) The Wyoming County Health Dept. has several new services thanks to a $40,000 grant from the West Virginia Dept. of Heath and Human Resources (DHHR).

The health department has recently implemented a new needle-exchange as part of a harm reduction program. The program will include family planning, immunizations, testing for sexually transmitted diseases, and counseling.

The program's implementation comes after  a recommendation by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the West Virginia Dept. of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) earlier in the year to implement harm reduction programs in several Southern West Virginia counties after the two agencies found rising levels of Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV in the area.

As part of the program, the health department has also acquired a new mobile unit to reach different parts of Wyoming County.  The unit will be available at the Old Fire Station in Alpoca on Fridays from 1-2:30 p.m., and in Jesse at the Old Shanty restaurant on Fridays from  3:15- 5 p.m.
