Mercer Schools prep parents, kids for Kindergarten

Saturday, Mercer County Schools held their third annual Ready Freddy event.

Hundreds of parents brought their kids to Mercer Mall on Saturday, though shopping was not their main purpose. They came to learn what they can expect when their kids begin school for the first time. Ready Freddy is designed for soon-to-be kindergarteners. But according to school teacher Samantha Dove, Pre-K children are now an added focus. "We have a new addition. His name is Ready Teddy. He's our birth to three mascot. We recognize that 80% of a child's brain develops by the age of three. So we decided to add some toddler friendly stations this year, so we can connect with these families early."
For any child, starting school can be a little scary. Dawn Crigger is the mother of a 5-year-old starting school this fall. She says Ready Freddy really excited her daughter for kindergarten. "I think it's a really great idea. It helps get kids ready early. It's really a lot of fun. My daughter is having a blast!"
While at the mall, I met a couple of kids; 5-year-old Amya and 4-year-old Ryder. Though a little camera shy, they now feel ready for school. I asked Amya "Are you guys looking forward to it?" Amya responded, "Yeah!"
Besides all of the activities inside, kids can come out and learn about bus safety, so they know what to better expect this fall.
