Beckley tries out free parking on Main & Neville during lunch

BECKLEY, W.Va. (WVVA) In an effort to boost business in Uptown, Beckley Mayor Rob Rappold has announced the city will allow free parking at the meters along Neville and Main Streets between 11:30 a.m.- 1p.m. The parking lot next to the State Building and Word Park will also be free during that time.

In a press release sent out on Friday, the mayor said "this is an experimental promotion to encourage people to patronize downtown restaurants and retail business."

Parking commissioners plan to conduct a parking/ survey over the next couple months. The promotion will last for 120 days, giving the parking commission time to evaluate the promotion and decide whether to continue.

The promotion comes after the city rolled out a new app called passport parking, which allows visitors to feed the meter on their mobile devices but increases the penalties for tickets. Parking on metered spots will continue to be free from 4:00 p.m.-8 a.m.
