Mercer County Schools using Spring Break to make up days missed

Posted: Updated:
MERCER COUNTY, WV (WVVA) -

The Mercer County Board of Education is making changes to its calendar in order to make up days missed during the teacher's strike.

Spring Break will be a short break for most students.

April 2 and April 3 have been converted to professional development days. That means teachers and staff must attend but students are off.

April 4, 5, and 6 will now be used as instructional days. However, attendance exemptions will be allowed for students if family activities can not be rescheduled. We also understand the days will not be used in calculations for exam exemptions.

"Mercer County Public Schools chose to convert Spring Break days instead of adding days to the end of the calendar because we believe they allow a greater opportunity to positively impact student achievement." stated Mercer County School Superintendent Dr. Deborah Akers. "

Students missed a total of nine instructional days during the teacher walkouts.
