AEP scam hits local elderly home

American Electric Power scams, or AEP scams, have hit the area yet again. This time, the victim is the Loving Hands Adult Care center.

Around 8:30 Friday morning, the building's power went out due to the high winds. Only 30 minutes later, the owner received a call from someone pretending to be an AEP employee requesting over $600 to get the power turned back on. However; it was all a scam.

"They probably targeted me because I have a business and because they might have thought that I had the money and maybe because of what kind of business we have. You know, we can't be without power," said Melissa Lucado, the owner of Loving hands Adult Care.

Luckily, Lucado caught on to the scam and avoided payment. She promptly contacted her local law enforcement to make them aware of the situation.

But now, she is worried for the well-being of others who may be in a similarly vulnerable situation.

"I'm 45 years old," she said. "If they scared me this bad -- if they get a hold of somebody that's elderly and that's going to be scared to go without heat, you know, they're going to do the same thing. Or if they get a hold of somebody who has got small children, they're going to be afraid to go without heat for days. I mean, it's hard to go without heat when it's cold."

If you or anyone you know may be the victim of a scam, do not hesitate to contact your local law enforcement.
