CHARLESTON, WV (WVVA) -

The West Virginia House of Delegates votes in favor of a bill to legalize sports betting in the state.

The legislation which passed Friday afternoon would legalize sports betting in the state's existing gambling facilities, including four horse racing tracks and the Greenbrier Resort. It would allow wagering on professional and collegiate sports by persons 21 years of age or older. If approved by the West Virginia Lottery Commission, the measure would also allow online/ mobile betting.

Despite considerable outcry from Major League Baseball, the NBA and constituents opposed to the move, the bill passed by a vote of 77-22.

“First of all, I have a faith-based objection to gambling of any kind,” says Del. Jeff Pack (District 28, Raleigh County). “The second reason I voted against it is I’m not interested in plugging holes with something as volatile as gambling. I think we need to spend our time more effectively."

The Senate voted in favor of legalizing sports betting last month. The measure will now head to the governor’s desk.
