Senate Finance Chair: "We will not be bullied"

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WVVA) As of Friday morning, members of the Senate Finance Committee said they had not received a fiscal note to accompany the House-passed pay raise bill for educators, service personnel, and state workers.

To complicate matters further, Senate Finance Chairman Craig Blair (R) said it has been a challenge just getting in and out of his office with hundreds of educators and service personnel rallying in the Capitol.

"I had everything in place so we could get the budget done in the sixty day session. This is blowing that up because all these different ideas are coming forward and I can't get a straight answer from anyone on whether it's a pay raise or PEIA. We're trying to to the right thing for all West Virginians."

Sen. Blair said his committee had planned to finish the budget by next week ( the end of the 60 session), but the teacher strike has now complicated that effort.

"We're not going to be bullied. We're the deliberative body and we've got plenty of time to manage this. People need to go back to the classroom. I'm not saying it's not going to be the five percent, but it could be other things as well. I'd encourage everybody to go back to the classroom and do their job."
