Kroger offering kids free fruit

PRINCETON, WV (WVVA) -

One popular grocery chain wants shoppers to know about a program they may not be aware of.

Kroger's Mid-Atlantic Division is encouraging children to begin healthy eating habits, by giving them one piece of fruit, for free, each time they visit a store.     The current selection for children 12-and-under includes bananas, apples or oranges. At the Kroger in Princeton, a child-sized display is set up right at the main entrance. Store Manager Dennis Miller says it's important to develop good habits at a young age. "Really, the program is basically nutrition facts for kids and their parents, to make them eat healthier foods. If you have something in front of a kid, like a fruit, maybe that will deter them from maybe a candy item or a sweet-good."

Miller also says the selection of fruit may vary a little by season, and he wouldn't be surprised to see kiwi-fruit as an option later this year.
