Beckley Common Council approves pay raise for city police officers

Beckley police officers are about to get a pay raise.

At Tuesday night's common council meeting, the council passed a measure increasing pay for existing officers, as well as raising the starting salary for new officers.

Beckley police chief Lonnie Christian says the $1500 pay raise will help ensure that Beckley's streets are protected by the "best in blue."

“What that does, is it not only lets us recruit good candidates and lets us be competitive with surrounding agencies, but it helps us retain those officers that we've gained experience with,” Christian said. “That's the biggest thing is we want to keep the experienced officers on duty to serve the public here in Beckley."

Also at the meeting, a first reading of an ordinance that would authorize the city's purchase of the old Black Knight Country Club, once owned by Gov. Jim Justice, for $3 million.

The motion passed and a second reading is scheduled for March 13th and will be open to public discussion.
