Beckley-native receives purple heart for service during Vietnam War

BECKLEY, WV (WVVA) -

A Vietnam War veteran received one of the highest honors of military service Saturday, decades after being injured by a grenade in battle.

Lance Corporal Robert L. Blair, a former marine of the 3rd battalion - 26th regiment, was presented with a purple heart at the Beckley Vet Center by Congressman Evan Jenkins.

Blair is a Beckley-native and says he is honored to receive the recognition, but the veteran says accepting the award was a bitter-sweet moment.

"I was thinking about all my buddies, some of them didn't come back,” Blair said. “Some of them are up on the wall in Washington, they didn't have this opportunity."

Blair's purple heart is the eighth medal awarded to him for his military service.

Before the ceremony, members of the Woodrow Wilson High School JROTC presented the colors.
