ICYMI: McDowell County charity receives new grant

Dominion Energy recently gave a grant to a charity in McDowell County.

Big Creek People in Action provides many services to the area. Co-Director Marsha Timpson says, "(We) purchased the building for $1, from the Board of Education, and opened our doors in 1990. I'm very proud of us because it's hard for a small non-profit to stay operating."
Timpson says they enlist the help of church groups and college students to accomplish their mission. "And I think that makes a whole different connection with them, when they are meeting people there. Connecting with the children, the families, the elderly. It makes a difference."
Timpson says she appreciates Dominion's donation of $5,000. "We struggle with finances. You know, supplies are not cheap. And some of the homes need so much."
Big Creek People in Action not only help those who live in Caretta, but people who also live in War... like the Army veteran who lives in this house behind me. Mike Ramsey says, "Well, we needed the bathroom (fixed) bad, and they did a great job. They painted the entire inside; the painted all the rooms. And the outside, they painted the outside of the house. Built steps for our deck. Aw, it meant a lot. It did. It meant a lot."

Timpson adds that the grant from Dominion Energy will go to buying more building supplies.
