Beckley to roll out new 'Passport Parking' app

BECKLEY, W.Va. (WVVA) The next time you forget to feed the meter in Uptown, you may be in for a shock. Beckley leaders are rolling out a new app that they say makes it easier for people to pay for parking.

For a twenty cent user fee, drivers can feed the meter and even add time on their phone. Visitors can still feed the meter with coins if they prefer.

"Our goal with Passport Parking is to make it more convenient for our citizens to pay for parking," explains Beckley's IT Dir. Bill Kelly.

Businesses, too, can provide their customers a code, he said, to compensate for the costs. "It makes it more convenient for people to park downtown."

Even though the app will not be available to customers until March, the City of Beckley has already started using the technology to write tickets which went up from five to eight dollars to pay for the technology.

"I got a ticket and saw that they had a new digital format. The price had gone up sixty percent," said Uptown business owner Jason Lockart.

"Creating an application for people to pay online is a great idea," he adds. "But to do it in a way that sends a 20 cent fee and then a three dollar fee out-of-state? That doesn't cater to millennials. It tells people to go somewhere else."

Kelly said the city will not profit from the venture. It will go to the company that maintains 'Passport Parking' in Charlotte, North Carolina.
