The West Virginia Office of Miners' Health and Safety reports the state's first coal mining fatality of 2018.

The fatal incident occurred at 3:55 a.m. Tuesday at Wolf Run Mining LLC, Sentinel mine in Barbour County.

According to Samantha Smith with the WV Dept. of Commerce, preliminary information indicates the worker, an electrician at the mine, "was struck by a coal rib roll while working on a continuous mining machine." He has been identified as Leonard W. Griffith, 52, of Valley Bend, WV.

Inspectors with the MHS&T have started their investigation into Griffith's death.

According to the Associated Press, the mine is owned by St. Louis-based Arch Coal and produces high-volume metallurgical coal. The mine has been temporarily idled.

Last year, there were eight fatal mining accidents reported in West Virginia. Click here for more information on previous mining fatalities.
