Police say Abingdon man beat panhandler on I-81 exit ramp

(WVVA) Police in Bristol, Virginia arrested a man who they said jumped out of a utility van and attacked a panhandler standing on the side of an exit ramp.

Trooper B.S. Davis was traveling nearby and witnessed a "shirtless" man, armed with a wooden stick, jump out of the passenger side of the vehicle and use the stick to hit the panhandler. It happened around 12:35 p.m. on Monday.

Tpr. Davis immediately ran to help out the panhandler, an 18-year-old man. It took several officers to take the 60-year-old suspect into custody. Police said the man also assaulted a woman driving the van.

Victor Asher, 60, was charged with three counts of assault on a police officer, domestic assault, malicious wounding, being drunk in public, disorderly conduct, obstruction of justice, resisting arrest, and possession of a controlled substance. He was taken to jail at the Bristol, Virginia Sheriff's Office.

Everyone involved refused to be treated for their injuries which were described as non-life threatening. 

Sgt. T.M Atwell treated the 18-year-old victim to a meal at a nearby restaurant, gave him a ride to a nearby bus station and bought him a a ticket "so he could safely continue on his way."
