Lee pointing Richlands in the right direction

A career backup,Richlands senior point guard Austin Lee is finally getting his chance in the spotlight. "Austin Lee has waited his time very well. He finally got his turn this year and he's doing an outstanding job for us," said head coach Fred Phillips.

Sitting behind several four year starters, Lee has been able to learn what it takes to lead."I'm like the quarterback of the basketball team. When it's a tough play or something, you're in a bind, you gotta know how to get up and get us through it," Lee said.

Filling the void left by departing senior Ethan Ratliff, his only hopes are to make it a smooth transition."I hope I'm half as good as he is. He was good. So as the point guard, it's the leadership role and he was very good at it and I hope these young guys say the same about me," Lee said.

His numbers may not jump out in the box score every night, but it's his other intangibles that make him a valuable piece to the puzzle."You know he doesn't take a whole lot of shots during the game, but he's got plenty of shooters around him. He's a defensive minded point guard. He's a pass first, shoot second point guard, which is what we need on this team," Phillips said.

Having already signed on to play at the next level, he isn't allowing the future to distract the present. "I'm very excited, but we got some goals we got to complete here right now. We want to go as far as we did last year and even further than that," Lee said.
